Comments

This is James Nicolson. In August 1876 he was farming 60 acres in Harpsdale as recorded in the censuses before and after. He was born in December 1814 in Bower, Caithness and so is 61 years old. Two of his 8 sons had already emigrated to Canada (and then on to the USA) and two more were about to follow in the coming months. Perhaps this photograph was a keepsake on the voyage. He looks remarkably like my grandfather, Gordon Nicholson, who would have been his grandson (though without the whiskers).
